<h2><strong>1. Make a Strong First Impression</strong></h2>
<div>Humans don’t have a long attention span. We have things to do, places to be, and, if you’re a VFX artist, movies to make! Hiring managers are no different, so make sure the first 10 seconds of your VFX reel are absolutely killer. While some recommend saving your best shots for last, your viewers probably aren’t going to stay long if the beginning isn’t engaging. Here’s what we recommend:</div>

<li>Start off with a banger (your best or second best shot).</li>
<li>Follow that with another top shot.</li>
<li>Your concluding shot should be your second or third best shot.</li>

<div>Think of the first seconds of your reel as a movie trailer opening—it’s there to grab your viewer’s attention. If they enjoy the trailer, they’ll want to see more.</div>

<div>Here’s a great example of a powerful opening from one of Alexandre Belbari’s animation reels. Notice how he starts off with an eye-catching comp and ends with an iconic scene from Guardians of the Galaxy.</div>

<h2><strong>2. Clear and Concise Contact Information</strong></h2>
<div>Ensure that your contact information is prominently displayed and concise. A brief self-introduction card in the first 3-5 seconds can be effective, but keep it clear and to the point. Include only essential contact details, like your email and your phone number, or a LinkedIn or ArtStation link. Prioritize contact methods you check regularly to avoid missing opportunities. <br><br>Overloading this section with unnecessary information or links to seldom-checked social media can lead to missed connections, potentially costing you your dream job. Whatever you do, keep it clean! I would recommend placing your contact information at the beginning and end of the reel for easy reference.</div>

<div>No matter how many times you’ve heard this, we’re going to emphasize it once again—there’s no room for mediocre shots in your reel. Don’t worry if you can’t make it exactly 2 minutes long. If you end up having around 1 minute of top-quality work, that’s just fine. Make sure every piece you add to your reel falls into the ‘my very best’ category. Don’t give your potential employer an excuse to question your skills!</div>

<div>If you can’t decide which of your shots deserve to be a part of the finest selection, ask your fellow artists for help. Every shot in your reel should make the person reviewing your application want to contact you right away.</div>

<div>For each project featured in your reel, include captions or a brief description that highlights your specific contributions, especially if you worked as part of a team. You probably have a few shots in your reel that you created with the help of other artists. When adding footage to your reel, remember to always give credit. Sure, it’s cool to see your progress and watch how your style evolved, but the hiring manager wants to see what you can offer right here and now. Focus on including recent work that best represents your current skill level and style. Outdated or irrelevant work can detract from your reel’s impact.</div>

Choose music that complements your work without overshadowing it, and keep in mind that many viewers (including the hiring manager!) may watch with the sound off to focus on the visuals. So, don’t sweat the soundtrack too much. Luckily, there are numerous websites where you can find music under the Creative Commons license. With royalty-free music, you will also be able to upload your reel on YouTube, Vimeo, or any other website without the risk of getting a copyright strike.</div>

<h2><strong>7. Include Breakdowns</strong></h2>
<div>Even though it’s not mandatory, <a href="https://www.actionvfx.com/blog/how-to-create-an-eye-catching-vfx-breakdown-or-showreel-that-will-set-you-apart"><strong>adding a quick scene breakdown</strong></a> for each shot can make your reel stand out by demonstrating your technical skills and understanding of the VFX process. This is especially beneficial when you have complex visual effects and compositing pieces. You can even insert concept arts for the scenes and effects you developed entirely by yourself. </div>

<h2><strong>8. Tailor Your Reel to the Job</strong></h2>
<div>You might be a multi-talented digital artist who does animation, VFX, compositing, lighting, and everything in between. That’s great! But unless you’re applying for the role of a CG generalist or a CG supervisor, there’s no need to make your reel an all-in-one. Instead, customize your reel to highlight the skills that are most relevant to the position you are applying for.</div>

<div>When the employer is looking for a candidate with a particular skill, they don’t need to see everything else you are capable of—they want to know if you are excellent at that one thing they would need from you. So if the job opening says ‘Senior FX artist’, focus on your VFX shots, not on character rigging, asset modeling, lighting, etc.</div>

<div>Additionally, including information about the software you used for a shot can be a great way to highlight your relevant skills. For example, if you know a company is looking for Houdini artists and 90% of your work was made in Houdini, you should probably include that in the shot description!</div>

<div>This is where references come into play. Look outside, watch some YouTube videos, and get inspired. And it’s not always about inspiration either, if you want something to look realistic, wouldn’t you copy the real thing as closely as possible? </div>
<div><br></div>
<div>Think of it as if someone asked you to draw a sloth from memory versus using a reference image. Most likely, unless you’re a ridiculously talented artist and have an unusual obsession with sloths, you would have greater success and reach greater realism with the reference image. </div>
<div><br></div>
<div>So let's discuss a few areas where real-world observations can highly improve your VFX compositions: caustics, particles, parallax, and atmospheric perspective.</div>

<strong><br><br>Caustics<br><br></strong><br>
</h2>
<div>So what are caustics? A caustic is the concentrated pattern of light that you get when it passes through glass or liquids. If you look at the two images below, you’ll immediately know what they are. </div>

<div>Caustics are known to be one of the most complex simulations to render. But there are ways to do it more simpler and without having to run intricate and multi-hour-long simulation renders. Corridor Crew made a very enlightening video that goes in-depth on how to do that.</div>

<div>But what I would like to focus on here is <em>observation</em>. How can observation help improve this effect? </div>
<div><br></div>
<div>If you were to take a stroll down to a local river or lake, or even in your backyard and glance into your swimming pool, what would you see? The light shimmers and changes as the water refracts it. </div>
<div><br></div>
<div>The dance of the light rays on the bottom is, ever-changing, ever-shifting. Each ray is similar and yet so completely different. So now think of how you can transfer this observation into your render. </div>
<div><br></div>
<div>Well, think of the ways that light interacts with objects in the pool, how the caustics flicker over the ground, how imperfections in the water break up those refractions, and how the light falls off through the water. All of these are key observations in making your render look as realistic as possible.</div>
<div><br></div>
<h2>
<strong><br><br>Particles<br><br></strong><br>
</h2>
<div>We see particles every day - when you blow the dust off an old relic while driving on a dirt road, when baking with flour - so on and so forth. Say you’re compositing a scene where a man walks down an old dusty hallway in the tombs of a Pharaoh, imagine what the particles would be like and how they would interact with the environment around them. </div>

<div>The ones that swirl behind the man walking, the ones that float silently throughout the entire tomb, the ones that get disturbed and fall when the man removes a rock, the ones that shine brightly in the light rays coming from the sun outside. </div>

<div>All these are vital observations to think about and apply to your composition. Go outside, grab a handful of dry dirt and toss it into the wind, or let it fall from your hand. Then, if you’re using VFX assets like our <a href="https://www.actionvfx.com/collections/debris-impact/category"><strong>ActionVFX dust and debris library</strong></a>, you can search through and choose the most realistic and accurate asset for your scene. </div>

<strong><br><br><br>Parallax<br><br></strong><br>
</h3>
<div>I have to admit, the word “parallax” sounds straight out of a science fiction movie. <em>“We need to make it to the parallax dimension before it’s too late!”</em> But this is no futuristic term. </div>
<div><br></div>
<div>Parallax is the apparent displacement of the difference in the apparent direction of an object as seen from two different points, not in a straight line with the object. A lot of words, yes I know. </div>
<div><br></div>
<div>Here’s the simple way to understand that: if you were to look at a tree and move side to side, the tree in front wouldn’t change perspective but the trees behind it would move in a different perspective.</div>

<div>But how does this affect your VFX? Well take for example a shot with both foreground and background elements and you need to do a sky replacement. </div>
<div><br></div>
<div>For motion tracking, would you track the foreground trees or the skyline trees? Well if you tracked the trees in the foreground, yes, technically you would track the <em>camera</em> motion, but you would get the wrong <em>parallax</em> motion, making the sky replacement look off and as if it was a bad track. </div>
<div><br></div>
<div>So you would want to track the skyline trees or even the clouds because it has the same perspective path as the sky you’re replacing. </div>

<strong><br><br><br>Atmospheric Perspective<br><br></strong><br>
</h3>
<div>This may seem like a very simple thing to remember but you’d be surprised how often it’s overlooked. Atmospheric perspective refers to the effect the atmosphere has on the appearance of an object as viewed from a distance. </div>
<div><br></div>
<div>So, due to particles in the air -  humidity, smog, clouds, whatever it may be - objects in the distance will have a different color or visibility than objects closer to you. That’s why distant hills and mountains always have a hazy, washed look to them.</div>
<div><br></div>

<div>So when making compositions with lots of foreground and background elements, especially for any worldbuilding type shots, make sure you put the correct amount of atmospheric perspective based on however close or far the objects are. This improves realism and production quality.</div>

<div>Never be ashamed to observe the real world for inspiration and compositing help. An artist would never be ashamed of using a reference, and you don’t have to either for your visual art. </div>

4 Real-World Observations that will Improve Your VFX Work

<div>It’s that time of year again. Screeners are out, nominations are in, and opinions are flying about the broadcast of the 93rd annual Academy Awards. The fully-named Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is an organization inseparable from the Hollywood machine. On one hand, the Oscars always feel a bit contrived—whether it be unworthy winners or shocking snubs—on the other, it’s a great opportunity to <a href="https://www.actionvfx.com/blog/the-top-5-vfx-breakdowns-from-the-oscars-2019"><strong>look back</strong></a> on the year's greatest silver screen moments. </div>

<div>For VFX, this often means a celebration of the biggest and baddest our industry has to offer. Whether it’s an incredible new world or even more destruction of New York at the hands of the next super-villain, these films are on the bleeding edge. </div>

<div>I’ll reveal my bias upfront: I loved Dune. The rolling vistas of sand, the gritty and tactile machinery, the incredible scale of the sandworm—the VFX of Dune are operating at a level beyond most blockbusters. Dune is a film whose visual achievement comes from top to bottom cohesion. </div>

<div>Everything from Paul’s fashion choices throughout the film to the incredibly unique dragonfly-inspired aircraft is not only aesthetically consistent but inherently justified. The world calls for these visuals in their diverse cultural groups and settings. It’s not just the VFX themselves that make this film spectacular either, it’s the way they meld into the overall package with cinematography, coloring, editing, audio, and everything in between. The VFX of Dune isn’t just icing on a cake, rather it’s a key ingredient that’s seamlessly mixed in. </div>

<div>In this incredible webinar from Double Negative, we get to see the range of work required to achieve such a result as well as some of the smart choices made in creating the film. Most notorious is the use of “sand screens” in place of our traditional green. This cuts down on spill, makes reflections more forgiving, and allowed the artists to lock in an iconic look to match the namesake of the film. Free Guy sneaks past this by being a movie that is just generally about video games and less about one specific IP. The film is a fun time out to the movies and brings with it some shiny fun effects courtesy of Digital Domain among many others. </div>

<div>In the car chase scene in this breakdown, we get a glimpse of the wild and high-octane energy that this film brings forward through VFX. The “in-game” sequences especially offer opportunities to throw caution to the wind and truly test how many ways you can destroy a city. Free Guy works because the world supports its absurdity. <h3><strong>No Time to Die - Charlie Noble, Joel Green, Jonathan Fawkner, and Chris Corbould</strong></h3>

<div>No Time to Die is another film with car chases but brings a bit more of a serious tone to the mix. The thing that’s interesting about the VFX of a spy movie is you have to know where to draw the line. It’s 007, not Fast 12, so the artists are going for something a bit more understated, yet just as gripping. </div>

<div>Double Negative is back for this breakdown (they’ve done a lot of work across this list) and showing off a range of work. When you think about a Bond film, your mind might go straight to bullet hits and helicopters, but perhaps even more impressive are the “invisible” effects used to build the world around our favorite British spy. This work can be as simple as a sign on a city corner, and as complex as entire cities on the horizon. Regardless, the effect is all the same: a world which you get lost in without even knowing it’s made in post.</div>

<div>The lesson from NTTD is to see how far you can push the environment while holding onto its realism. The shot at 20 seconds is perfect here, as Bond walks towards his destination off a dock, we see what is a perfectly serviceable port town—the artists could have stopped there—but they wanted to take it up a notch. With a wipe, we’re greeted by the faint glow of buildings up into a mountain-bound city. It’s a great touch and brings us to an uncharted location fit for a spy. </div>

<h3><strong>Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings - Christopher Townsend, Joe Farrell, Sean Noel Walker, and Dan Oliver</strong></h3>

<div>The story of The Witcher began over 35 years ago when Andrzej Sapkowski submitted his first piece about Geralt of Rivia for a Polish short story competition. Since then, the story of the powerful witcher has grown into a series of six fantasy novels and 15 short stories with three video games, a movie, and two series based on it. </div>

<div>So the level of expectations for Netflix’s take on The Witcher was sky-high and the show did not disappoint. The Witcher’s die-hard fans keep debating over ‘questionable’ cast choices that are not in line with the original story (actually Geralt is supposed to be like two times older?) but we just can’t stop drooling over visual effects on the show. </div>

<div>Because the story is set in the Middle Ages, there has been an overwhelming number of set extensions from magic forests to enormous castles in the middle of the sea. Plus, with nearly every character being a witch, a mage, or an elf, the show required a massive amount of VFX ranging from energy shields to morphing and everything in between. </div>

The NBC show about the afterlife that features the insanely talented Ted Danson and Kristen Bell earned over 80 nominations and won 14 awards. </div>

<div>The series is set in the so-called The Good Place (a.k.a. heaven as we normally call it) where everything is designed to make your (after) life comfortable and carefree. Even though you might think a show like this would need green screens all over the place and a whole lot of matte painting, The Good Place used a lot of real-life environments - the series was filmed in San Marino, California which already looks like a heavenly neighborhood. </div>

<div>We’ll start with the piece of media which spawned the idea for this list. Riot Games has been a giant in the video game industry for over a decade through their flagship title and one of the most popular games ever made, League of Legends. </div>

<em>Arcane</em> is good; really good. It’s so good that it nearly transcends the concept of “adaptation”. With a solid run as the number one show on all of Netflix, this behemoth of a project put a stake in the ground alongside other animations-for-adults and declared that the western market is ready for the medium. </div>

<em>Arcane</em> was created in collaboration between Riot and French animation studio Fortiche and the world is talking. The aesthetics of <em>Arcane</em> are far and away from its strongest takeaway. "Painterly" is the only word that comes to mind to accurately describe it. <br><br>This comes down to a blend so masterful <a href="https://www.actionvfx.com/blog/5-inspiring-digital-artists-creating-nfts-today"><strong>between CG and hand-painted</strong></a> visuals that the line at which you’d separate the two falls away entirely. Work like <em>Arcane</em> teaches us that with a little ingenuity and a lot of work, your medium never has to get in the way of your vision. </div>

The filmmakers of the next generation won’t come out of movie theaters, they’ll come out of YouTube. </div>

<div>On the VFX end, <em>VHGS</em> shows how filmmakers don’t have to shy away from going stylized in favor of hyper-realism. When depicting video games especially, one must consider the line between suspended disbelief and a full copy-paste. <div>Back to a video game adaptation that feels more like a transcendent work, <em>The Witcher</em> elects to go for the foundational source material itself, utilizing the world, characters, and style of the game (and books) above all else. Though <em>The Witcher</em> may not have been the <em>Game of Thrones</em> that Netflix was looking for, it brought a lot to the table and especially showed how <a href="https://www.actionvfx.com/blog/world-building-lessons-from-three-iconic-vfx-climates"><strong>crucial</strong></a> world-building and character accuracy is to adaptation. </div>

<br>The strength of <em>The Witcher</em> comes from its grit and intensity. From the sharp eyes of Geralt to the screams of a ghoul as it dies by his sword, <em>The Witcher</em> is known for brutality. In this way, the filmmakers have a <em>feeling</em> to follow more than anything else when they look to adapt page and game to screen. <br><br>This can be executed in some major ways such as the very setting itself, to much more subtle ways such as the colors of a scene. Is <em>The Witcher</em> a world of blue and pink, for example, or a world of black and grey and crimson?
