In this tutorial, we are going to learn how to do a smoke trail effect inspired by the Marvel movie Morbius, in Adobe After Effects.

“I went from dying... to feeling more alive than ever. Increased strength and speed... the ability to use echolocation... and an overpowering urge to consume blood.” - Dr. Michael Morbius

There are several VFX-focused tutorials we could come up with for the upcoming Marvel Studios movie Morbius, but with the obvious blood VFX plug aside, this tutorial is going to focus on the smoke trail effect; or echolocation effect that emanates from the good doctor’s body.

This AE tutorial will cover:

  • How to use corner pin data from Mocha as trackers.
  • How to combine multiple ActionVFX elements to create the smoke trail.
  • How to apply the plate's color texture to the smoke trail.
  • How to add a displacement effect.
